From locally sourced meats, eggs, vegetables and honey the menu at the Shanty absolutely exudes freshness. This is a real community hangout in Darien. And just like the town itself, it is so fresh and clean and homey, you’re going to leave there with a longing to return soon.

Owner Dana Pontello’s McIntosh County roots go deep and when she took the plunge to open the café, she had no doubt what the name would be. The “Shanty” pays homage to an old ice cream parlor on Butler Island where Dana’s grandparents once courted. With her family history in mind, she set out to create a place, like the ice cream parlor where family and friends would gather. She has succeeded on that front beyond compare.

On Fridays and Saturdays, enjoy a leisurely brunch menu all day. As mentioned, the eggs and sausage are locally sourced, and you can taste it. You have to get the sausage from Wainright Farms. It is a truly memorable experience. If you’re getting the breakfast platter or the build-your-own sandwich, the local ingredients really shine.

And then there’s the coffee! The Shanty offers a wonderful variety of delicious coffees, whether you’re settling in to sip and savor your cup or grabbing one to enjoy on the go. Each cup is rich, flavorful, and made to be enjoyed. There’s something wonderfully comforting about sitting back with a good cup of coffee, and at The Shanty, that simple pleasure feels like a little treat.

If you drop in for lunch, everything is fresh, delicious, and made to order, but the chicken salad is definitely a favorite. If that’s what you have your heart set on, you might want to get there early; it’s that popular! And served on a croissant. You really can’t go wrong.

My personal favorite is the Italian, piled high with salami, pepperoni, ham, provolone cheese, tomato, lettuce, and just a little mayonnaise. I love mine on a hoagie roll, but you can also order it as a wrap or on their homemade white bread. And here’s an added bonus: you can make any sandwich a combo for just $2. That’s a deal you really can’t beat!

The Darien Duo is another favorite, and the homemade Greek dressing is incredible! Every week, The Shanty features a new and unique special, often a creative sandwich combination that is as delicious as it is unexpected. They also offer a specialty coffee each week, giving you yet another reason to stop by and see what’s new.

Whatever you order, you can count on it being fresh, delicious, and prepared especially for you. Because that’s what The Shanty is all about, a delightful little spot where you can meet friends, enjoy a cup of coffee, grab breakfast or lunch, and know that your visit will always be a special part of your day.
