First Fridays in downtown Brunswick have become a beloved tradition for so many. Newcastle Street, closed to traffic, fills with laughter and music as it welcomes families, friends, and visitors to stroll freely. Restaurants spill out onto sidewalks, food trucks line the streets, drinks are served at cheerful pop-up stations, and local shops keep their doors open a little longer. Add in live bands playing in the squares, and you have the perfect recipe for a lively, family-friendly evening.

This particular First Friday, we decided to step away from the bustling street and try something different: the Fish Fry at Elks Lodge 691.

From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt welcoming and relaxed. The lodge itself is spacious and comfortable, with plenty of seating, soft music playing in the background, and a full bar available for those who want to unwind. It’s the kind of place where you instantly feel at ease.

Not Only Generous, But Delicious

The plate was nothing short of impressive. For just $12, we were served a hearty meal that included two perfectly fried pieces of fish, golden hush puppies, creamy cheese grits, crisp coleslaw, your choice of sweet or unsweet tea, and even dessert to finish it all off.

Every bite tasted like a true comfort food, made with care and served with pride. The portions alone make it a great value, but the flavor makes it unforgettable.

Dinner is served from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and whether you choose to dine in or take your meal to go, the experience is just as satisfying.

What makes this Fish Fry even more meaningful is its purpose. Proceeds from each dinner go toward supporting local charities and veterans, adding a deeper sense of community to an already enjoyable evening.

Additionally, A Place to Gather Year-Round

Beyond the Fish Fry, Elks Lodge 691 offers weekly bingo every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., creating another opportunity for the community to come together. Food and drinks are available, and once again, the proceeds benefit local causes, including veterans.

They also serve their popular fish fry for lunch on the third Friday of each month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., perfect for those who can’t make the evening hours.

Located at 1509 Union Street in Brunswick, the Elk Lodge 691 Fish Fry is a nice respite from the hustle and bustle of Newcastle.
